576 SQUADRON LANCASTER CENTURIONS
Between 1941 and 1945 7,377 Avro Lancaster airframes were built by or under contract from A.V.Roe and Company Limited, known as the AVRO Group, which included:
Avro at Chadderton and Newton Heath (Manchester) with a final assembly factory at Woodford airfield, south of Manchester and
Yeadon (Leeds.)
Sir W.G. Armstrong Whitworth Aircraft Ltd, Whitley and Bagington, Coventry with a final assembly factory at Bitterswell airfield near Rugby.
Vickers Armstrong at Castle Bromwich, Birmingham and Hawarden,Chester.
Metropolitan - Vickers Limited at Mosley road and Trafford park, Manchester.
Austin Motors at Longbridge, Birmingham.
Victory Aircraft Limited, Malton, Ontario, Canada
3,249 Lancasters were lost either due to enemy action or training accidents with only 35 Lancasters ever completing 100 or more operations. Of these 35 Centurions, 576 Squadron had on charge four.
